From Training Wheels to Carbon Wheels: My Daughter's Road Bike Journey
There's something magical about watching your child discover a passion. For my daughter, that passion turned out to be cycling — and the transformation has been nothing short of incredible.
The Beginning: Mountain Bike Days
Like many kids, she started on a mountain bike. Chunky tires, upright position, built for stability over speed. Those early rides were always together — she'd never venture out alone. The mountain bike was her training ground, where she learned balance, braking, and the simple joy of moving on two wheels.
But I could see something growing. A curiosity. A desire for more.
The Transition: Gravel and Beyond
Next came the gravel bike. Suddenly, the terrain options expanded. We explored paths we'd never considered before — forest trails that connected to roads, beach paths that led to coffee shops. She was hooked.
Then came the hybrid — a gravel-road bike that straddled both worlds. This is where things started to shift. The geometry was more aggressive, the tires thinner, the speed... addictive.
Still, every ride was with me. "Dad, are we going today?" became the daily question.
The Full Carbon Moment
And then, the full carbon road bike.
I remember her first ride on it. The way her eyes widened when she felt the difference. The responsiveness. The lightness. The way it seemed to float over the pavement.
"This is... different," she said, somewhere between a whisper and a revelation.
Different doesn't begin to cover it.
The Transformation I Didn't Expect
Here's what I wasn't prepared for: independence.
From mountain bike through hybrid, she never rode alone. Not once. Cycling was something we did together, and I treasured every kilometer of it.
But now? Now she can't wait for me to finish work.
"Dad, I'm going out for a quick spin."
"Dad, I did 20k while you were in your meeting."
"Dad, can we go again? I already rode this morning but I want to show you this route I found."
She rides alone now. Confidently. Joyfully. The carbon bike didn't just change her cycling — it unlocked something. A sense of capability. Of freedom. Of "I can do this myself."
What the Bikes Taught Her
| Bike Stage | What She Learned |
|---|---|
| Mountain Bike | Balance, confidence, basics |
| Gravel Bike | Versatility, exploration |
| Hybrid Road | Speed, efficiency, road skills |
| Full Carbon | Independence, passion, identity |
A Parent's Reflection
There's a bittersweet feeling watching your child need you less. But there's also immense pride.
She doesn't need me to ride anymore. She wants to ride with me. That's different. That's better.
The carbon bike was never just about the weight savings or the aero gains. It was the vehicle — literally — for her to discover that she's capable of more than she thought. That the world is bigger when you can explore it on your own terms.
To Fellow Cycling Parents
If you're riding with your kids, keep at it. The progression might be slow. The "are we there yet?" moments will test your patience. But somewhere along the way, something clicks.
And one day, they won't be asking if you're going riding.
They'll be telling you they already went.
And that's the best feeling in the world.
